Masters of all the religious traditions on earth now understand that spiritual training is essential not solely for monks and nuns but for all people, whatever their faith or way of life. The nature of spiritual development is intensely practical, active, and effective. The danger we are all in together makes it essential now that we no longer think of spiritual development as a luxury but as a necessity for survival.

As a famous Tibetan teaching says: “When the world is filled with evil, all mishaps should be transformed into the path of enlightenment.”

We are living on the edge of one of the greatest changes ever described by humankind. Why? Because God is giving humankind as a whole the unprecedented opportunity to advance their spiritual evolution faster and farther than ever possible in history. There are several reasons for this. First, most of the extremely powerful, fast-working teachings have never been widely taught to people. Until now, they were secretly passed between generations of gurus and select disciples. Sri Siva is the first in his tradition with permission to teach these simple and powerful, proven practices in the West. And He is doing so right now.

Second, the energy conditions in the world at this time are perfect for such accelerated practice. Normally, this advancement would require lifetimes of rigorous, devoted practice. In this new millenium we shall look back at the history and see that there has been a common theme running all along. Many Spiritual teachers, Wise men and Masters have suffered greatly to tell us this. But in our ego based material world of fast food and slow evolution people in power told us what to do and when to do it.

Finally we, through the information age (cob web around the world) can communicate (transcend physical bodies) and share information about absolutely anything. Thus we can learn about things we never thought existed - either held back from us or simply hidden in pockets of the Globe.

Today we are all living at a historical time and cultural juncture where a massive transition and transformation is taking place, both at the quantitative and the qualitative level. This involves, among many other things, a massive expansion and heightening of human consciousness, which is bound to bring about major psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual transformations. Practically all social institutions worldwide - from education to health care and from politics to religion and involving all aspects of our lives, both individual and collective - are presently in a state of crisis, which implies real and great dangers and just as real and great opportunities.

At this time, the passage from the "horizontal" (external, physical) dimension to the "vertical" (internal, psycho-spiritual) dimension is required of all of us, whether we know it and like it or not, and mysticism holds the key to that fundamental passage. This is the reason why some of the greatest thinkers of our times have declared:

"The 21st century will be spiritual...or will not" (Andre Malraux)

"Below (in lower states of consciousness) there are no more solutions, while above (in higher states of consciousness ) there are no problems" (Roberto Assagioli)

"The greatest challenge and newest frontier of the future can no longer be the physical one, they must become the spiritual one" (Arnold Toynbee)

These incisive and perceptive statements actually repeat and highlight, in different words, Jesus' long-ago statement: "What shall profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul?" which I translate to mean "What will happen to me if I gain everything - money, power, position - in the outer world but can no longer perceive meaning, purpose, beauty, and value in what I am, in what I have, and in what I live?"

Certain events in my own life led me towards religion as a possible source for such an answer. Todayt, I am convinced that religion does in fact, hold the solutions to the most important problems of human life and to suffering in particular. I am not speaking of the "exoteric" (official, external) side of religion, but rather it's "esoteric" (internal and personally lived) aspects.

What I call the "esoteric" side if religion is what is generally known as the "mystical side" or mysticism, which is based upon the direct personal observation and experience of the deeper aspects of Reality with which one has united or become "at one" with. Hence, it is in the domain of mystical spirituality and direct personal experience of the deeper aspects and laws if the universe and of oneself where one must look for such answers and for the real key to human life.

Hence, the vital and timely importance of this series and of its present volume, Christian Mysticism and related texts

What is mysticism, or the esoteric side of religion? Let us briefly turn to Evelyn Underhill, a world recognized expert in this area for the first half of this century:

To be a mystic is to simply participate here and now in the real and external life in the fullest, deepest sense which is possible to man. It is to share, as a free and conscious agent - not as a servant, but as a son - in the joyoys travail of the Universe: its mighty onward sweep through pain and glory to its home in God.

.......In the greatest mystics we see the highest and wildest development of that consciousness to which the human race has attained....But the germ of that same transcendent life, the spring of the amazing energy which enables the great mystic to rise to freedom and dominate this world, is latent in all of us: an integral part of humanity.

Finally she concludes that:

..Their passion appears to be the prosecution of a certain spiritual and intangible quest: the finding of a "way out" or a "way back" to some desirable state in which, alone they can satisfy their craving for absolute truth.

To become a mystic, to enter the esoteric side of religion, one must undergo a general and progressive training leading to the purification and consecration of one's being and to the transformation and expansion of one's consciousness. This is best acheive by proceeding gradually from the "exoteric" to the "esoteric" aspect of religion. To fly, a bird (which has once been the symbol of human consciousness, or the soul in many cultures and traditions) need two wings.

One wing represents tradition, the long and time tested experience of many men and women under appropriate supervision, the other direct personal vision and experience in higher states of consciousness. The great world religions have always provided an authentic tradition if, at times, the "direct and personal vision and experience" remained hidden and latent because external circumstances were quite dangerous for this type of adventure or because of lack of genuine "spiritual fathers and mothers," proper guides who can lead the serious aspirant on the path to spiritual illumination in a safe and effective way.

Obviously, mysticism, spirituality, and the esoteric aspect of religion cannot be adequately described and understood in intellectual terms. They ,must necessarily, be a personally lived experience which only the spiritual Self, the Christ-within, can provide in His own time, when a person is ready. But one must begin somewhere and have tools with which to do the inner work. This book provides such opportunity and tools for the serious candidate.

Life on Earth is a great and very complex adventure comprised of many different "adventures". The greatest and most important of these is unquestionably the spiritual adventure, because it is the only quest and the way that leads one to the very heart and core of Reality and of oneself.

Today, with all the incredible transformations and developments that are taking place on earth and in the human psyche, the spiritual adventure has become more important than ever as it may well be our last "living Source" of authentic meaning and comprehension (for the mind), motivation and appreciation (for the heart), and energy and strength (for the will.

In your recent book "Ethics for the New Millennium," you called for a "spiritual" and then an "ethical revolution." Are you now willing to emerge as a prophet?

I just am speaking out on behalf of the millions of people who still suffer so much. Some are killed because of the arms trade. Some starve because of extreme poverty. Some suffer because of the ruined environment - things like that. Such people, I think, because of their own harsh experience, have a strong feeling of sadness, bitter resentment. Yet they are forced to remain silent. So I feel for these people, and I am just expressing my feelings as a spokesman for so many millions of silent people. That's all I am doing. I have no desire for power or status as some sort of prophet. I have no courage to challenge anyone. I have no desire to confront the world.

Also, today, this is not the business of any one individual. Everywhere there are all sorts of organizations that are concerned with these things. Everyone has the same responsibility now - I think it's the democratic way.

With increased awareness, with a stronger sense of concern, every person must come forward and join together as one body, each one cooperating with every other. There are some individuals - some intellectuals, some religious persons and quite a few scientists - who all have real awareness of the critical situation in the world. But one problem is that they each just express their own view and then let a few organizations carry the burden as best they can.

Now, if we could more often come together, discuss the problems in depth, make some appeals for positive action or even offer stronger criticism of wrong actions, and even tell the U.N. or some important governments - then that's the way to have some positive effect.

It's not a matter for just one lone Tibetan who comes from a very faraway, remote area to assume some sort of extraordinary responsibility and seek out some special confrontation. That would just be silly! Just look at my age. I think it is my time, soon, to say goodbye.

Nowadays, I really wish for more time to think things over more deeply, to meditate and gain a more profound experience. That's my real wish. In the meantime, on these important issues my commitment will remain unwavering until my death. I'm certainly ready for any international conference, and even for some kind of movement - though soon I think I will arrive in some sort of wheelchair [laughs! But I will still keep on coming, even that way, continuing until my death, because of my commitment - and even in my next life.

Seems to me our end game might be summarized as :-

1. To "raise" global consciousness.

2. To create a paradise (Heaven on Earth) here and now.

We have somehow come to believe that if we achieve 1 then 2 must and will automatically follow. We have somehow come to believe that if we follow the Thought, Word, Action, paradigm as in our individual lives, then by "raising" ( I am not comfortable with "raising", perhaps re-tuning would be better ???) global consciousness we will create this Heaven on Earth we seek.

There are those who suggest that if we reverse this paradigm in our individual lives, that is we ACT first as if the condition were met, then this will have the effect of creating words, and thoughts and will also result in the condition being manifest, perhaps even more quickly. Now, if we apply that reverse paradigm idea to the global situation we might start ACTING as though global consciousness had already been "raised".

We might start being nicer to each other, kinder to each other etc...... We are each given countless opportunities to choose each day, we can choose to "KISS the cat, rather than KICK the cat. Every one of these positive acts would cause the recipient to perhaps change their erstwhile negative view of the world, and even by only a fraction, we would have "raised" global consciousness. Dripping water will eventually wear a hole through solid rock.

Notice that ACTING is not the same as pretending. Like all the best "actors" we would take on the qualities which we would wish to express in this new Earth. The stage is set. We live on a wonderful planet, which provides enough of everything so that no-one need go without. Only the "actors" need to revise their scripts ! As more and more people began "raising" their act, so the global observers will become aware of a "new Earth" and will begin to raise their expectations and define a new "norm".

Thus global consciousness would begin to rise in a self perpetuating spiral.

Eclipsed by Ego

I'll never forget, at eclipse festival, Devon, in August 1999. It was a cloudy morning so we decided to bring a pocket LCD TV to see the actual sun and moon as it happened, above the clouds. Some security guards stopped with us as they saw the pocket tv - so that they could also watch the eclipse - we happily obliged.

During the eclipse my girlfriend said to me and the security guards, ' Now we should think of World Peace and caring for our environment,'

the security guys replied,' Your talking to the wrong people luv, we don't want peace, we want the opposite!!'

We could n't believe it. At first we were angry by how naive, ignorant and egotistical they seemed.

Later I felt that society, friends and family had conditioned them that way.

Now I look back and I think, their fearful ego's were talking -trying to sound hard /fear of losing approval of their mates.

It is bouncers / security guards like that - the ones that think they're so hard, that need help. I try not to get angry, Instead I think of sending them peace and love (possibly surrounding them in a violet flame!) .

No regrets though in what we've done in society. As meant to be Part of The Divine Plan. Just part of learning process. - Manure for the flowering!!

Being and Becoming

The essence of transformative spirituality is to be fully present to the unfolding mystery of Now. The tendency of the mind to wander in dreams of the future and memories of the past is neutralized by the discipline of consciously bringing your attention back to the immediacy of Now.
Your intention to live each moment as consciously as possible is a commitment to Being, rather than to the dreams and desires of mental becoming. You understand that both spiritual growth and real life are possible only in each consciously lived moment of Now.

This commitment to Being, however, occurs within the context of the inescapable evolutionary process of becoming. All life is in a constant state of flux. The universe had a beginning and continues to expand at the speed of light. Sometime in the distant future, the universe will reach the limit of its expansion and will begin to contract at the speed of light until it disappears back into the eternal void of consciousness that is called God, the beyond. The constant state of all life is change or becoming.

Understanding the dialectical dance of Being and becoming is important for seekers of truth. We have minds that are capable of future projections, desires and fantasies. It is this mental state of becoming that robs us of real life and perpetuates the ego/mind's illusory sense of individual doership.
When the mind has learned to rest in Being and all dreams and mental projections of becoming have dissolved, enlightenment occurs. Now you live consciously and naturally in the cosmic flow of Being.

Although the mental state of becoming has evaporated with the ego, the body-mind-soul is still an organic part of existence and continues to evolve according to its predestined blueprint. Life is constantly in a state of flux, and the evolutionary process of becoming reflects this fundamental truth.
After enlightenment, your mind is silent, luminous and free from the mental disturbance of becoming. Yet even as you rest in Being, evolution still continues its inexorable odyssey of becoming.

I recommend that seekers leave the evolutionary process of becoming in the hands of the Whole. After all, the power and intelligence that creates the universe also knows how to manage your future. Your ego/mind does not need to be involved with becoming.
Stay focused on persuading your mind to return again and again to fully experience Being herenow. This renunciation of mental becoming is vital for spiritual growth, but it does not impede the evolutionary shifts that are the manifestation of life's constant state of change or becoming.
To enjoy real life and to grow quickly in consciousness, all that is required is to stay focused on Being and to leave evolution and becoming to God.

Relax.
Trust in God.
She knows what She's doing.
